Las Vegas Plumbing Alert: How Hard Water Wrecks Your Home (and What to Do)
Plumbing • Las Vegas

What hard water looks like here, how to test it, and which fixes actually protect your pipes and appliances.

Hard water scale and mineral content in Las Vegas homes

Las Vegas water is notoriously hard. If you are seeing white residue on fixtures, dry skin after showers, or a water heater that seems to age too fast, mineral buildup is probably part of the problem. The goal is not just better-feeling water — it is protecting plumbing, valves, and appliances from premature wear.

What does hard water usually look like?

  • • White chalky spots on faucets, shower doors, and dishes
  • • Soap that does not rinse well or lather easily
  • • Dry skin, dull hair, and rough-feeling laundry
  • • Reduced water flow from fixtures as scale builds inside
  • • Water heaters and dishwashers wearing out sooner than expected

How do you test it and read the number?

1) Check the city report

Look for hardness listed in gpg or ppm on your local water quality report.

2) Use a test strip or kit

This is the quickest way to get a real number before spending money on equipment.

Hardness Range (gpg) ppm Type
0–30–50Soft
4–751–120Moderately hard
8–10121–180Hard
11+180+Very hard

Do you need a softener or just a filter?

🏆 Traditional softener

Best when you want real hardness reduction for the whole house and better protection for plumbing and appliances.

💡 Salt-free conditioner

A lower-maintenance option that can reduce scale problems, but it does not truly soften water the same way.

🛡️ Filter + protection combo

Useful if you also want to address sediment, taste, or other water-quality concerns beyond hardness alone.

How much damage can hard water cause over time?

  • • It coats heating elements and makes water heaters work harder.
  • • It narrows flow inside fixtures and valves, which can lead to service calls and replacements sooner.
  • • It leaves residue on shower glass, tile, and faucets that becomes harder to remove over time.
  • • It shortens the comfortable life of appliances that use a lot of water.

Can you DIY any of this?

You can test your water yourself and compare system options, but sizing and installing the right setup is where many homeowners overspend. A system that is too small, poorly plumbed, or placed in the wrong location will not solve the problem well.
